IES 2020 Mains Exam Centres, Eligibility, Syllabus & Registration
UPSC announced new exam dates on its website on July 14. Earlier, UPSC on July 1 issued a one-line notice to postpone the IES 2020 main exam. In the original UPSC exam calendar, the IES main exam was scheduled to be conducted on June 28 but it was postponed because of coronavirus to August 9. Now the UPSC has rescheduled the IES main exam 2020 to October 18.
The UPSC has issued new exam calendar for the remaining year 2020. The candidates can strengthen their IES 2020 exam preparation because now there is plenty of time to prepare and revise the full IES syllabus.
Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam, also known as Engineering Services Examination (ESE), is a national level recruitment exam organised by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The exam is conducted to recruit candidates for engineering positions for the various department working under the Government of India. The Engineering Services Examination is conducted for four branches of engineering namely:
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
In the past, this exam had been conducted with the name of Indian Engineering Services(IES) exam. The IES exam is considered as one of the toughest examinations in the country. Nearly, two lakh candidates appear for the examination every year. Engineering Services Exam or IES exam recruits the Group A and Group B officers at the technical positions for Government of India. The IES exam is a three-stage recruitment process – IES Preliminary, IES Main and Personality Test. On the basis of merit of candidates in IES exam, they are recommended to the Union Government for the available posts. Nature of work for an engineering officer selected through IES exam depends on the engineering branch and the cadre s/he is recruited for.

IES Exam Eligibility
It is mandatory for candidates to comply with the eligibility norms as prescribed by UPSC in order to be able to appear for the Engineering Services Examination. The admissions at all the three stages of the examination will be purely provisional and are subject to fulfilling the eligibility norms.

For Naval Armament Service – MSc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject. For Indian Radio Regulatory Service – MSc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject or MSc with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject. |
IES Exam Age Limit
The upper age limit of 30 years is relaxable up to 35 years in case of government servants serving in the following categories:

Note: Relaxation will not be considered to probationary officers appointed against a permanent post. However, relaxation in case of probation will be considered of the officer appointed already retains a lien on a permanent post in a Department/Office under the control of authorities as listed above.
Age relaxation in case of Railways
Officers serving Indian Railways will also be treated at par with the Indian Railway officers for age relaxation. The upper age limit for various categories is given below:

Note: Candidates belonging to reserved category and from any of the mentioned ex-servicemen category will get cumulative age relaxation.
IES Exam Process
Step 1: IES Application Form 2020
- The candidates need to fill the IES application form 2020. The forms are available online on the official website of UPSC
- While filling up the form, candidates have to select the preferred venue for the test centre
- After filling the form, the candidates need to submit the prescribed application fees as per their category
Step 2: Download IES Admit Card 2020
- The IES admit card 2020 will be issued on the official website for downloads. The candidates will need their application number and date of birth to download the admit card
- UPSC admit card is an important document having a variety of information. We suggest preserving the admit cards until the admission process is successfully conducted
Step 3: IES Preliminary Exam 2020
- Students need to appear for IES 2020 preliminary entrance exam as per the schedule mentioned in the important date’s section
- Aspirants are advised to reach the exam centre at least an hour before the commencement of the exam
Step 4: IES Prelims Result 2020
- UPSC will be declaring the results for IES 2020 preliminary exam on their official website.
- Candidates shall check their IES 2020 preliminary results once announced, by simply submitting their application number and date of birth on the official website.
- After the IES Result for prelims 2020, the candidates need to fill out the IES Main Detailed Application Form(DAF) for the IES Main Exam 2020.
Step 5: IES Main Exam 2020
- Students who clear the IES preliminary examination will be allowed to appear for IES 2020 main entrance exam as per the schedule mentioned in the important date’s section
- Aspirants are advised to reach the exam centre at least an hour before the commencement of the IES Main exam
Step 6: IES Main Result 2020
- UPSC will be declaring the results for IES 2020 main entrance exams on their official website.
- Candidates will be able to check their IES 2020 main results once announced, by simply submitting their application number and date of birth on the official website.
- Candidates who clear the IES 2020 main exam will then be called for the interview round. This will be the final stage of the IES exam selection process.
Step 7: IES Interview 2020
IES selection process comprises the Personal Interview round. Candidates who clear both IES pre and main examination are only allowed to participate in the final interview round. Only those candidates who clear the personal interview round will be qualified for the recruitment process.
Step 8: IES Result 2020
UPSC will commence with the recruitment of IES 2020 qualified candidates at various government offices on the basis of the chosen branch if engineering and vacancies available. This will be the final process after which candidates will join the government offices as Executive engineers, mid-level managers or bureaucrats.
Step 9: IES Cut-off and Reserve List
IES cut-off will be released after the final result. In addition to the IES cut-off marks, IES reserve list will also be issued stating the number of candidates for each category and for each Engineering branch.
This will mark the end of the IES Exam process 2020.

IES 2020 main exam will be conducted on October 18. As per the UPSC timeline, the IES 2020 admit card is schedule i.e. three weeks before the exam date. But UPSC can release the IES 2020 admit card well before the official time as done for the IAS admit card. The UPSC has changed the format of the exam admit card and now the Government identity card number is also printed on the admit card. The candidates are required to carry the same identity proof to the exam venue mentioned in the admit card
